Company History
More than 50 years ago, Roy F. Weston began translating a societal imperative --- addressing the environmental threat to the global quality of life --- into a business challenge. Following his graduation from the University of Wisconsin in 1933, Mr. Weston entered public sector service as an engineer for the Highway Department. Three years later, he joined the State’s Department of Health as a district engineer. After completing graduate studies in public health engineering at the University of Minnesota and his master’s degree in sanitary engineering (now known as environmental engineering) at New York University, he joined the Atlantic Refining Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In 1949, Mr. Weston formed Roy F. Weston and Associates, working out of his home. Six years later, he moved his business, with a staff of 5, down the road to Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, and in 1957, Roy F. Weston, Inc. was founded.
In the 1960s, based on the growth of the company’s client list, and the resources and capabilities to provide a wider array of professional services, WESTON moved to its present 53-acre campus location in West Chester, Pennsylvania. By the end of the decade, WESTON’s staff numbered more than 150 and annual sales exceeded $4 million.
The 1970s saw the beginning of a major company expansion program throughout the United States, as well as the company’s first international ventures which led to the formation of Weston International. During this time, WESTON also won its first million-dollar contract, and added municipal incineration design and permitting, occupational health services, environmental training, and wastewater treatment facility construction to its list of capabilities. By the end of the decade, WESTON had more than 500 employees.
During the 1980s, the company’s success led to a public offering of stock and a place on Forbes Magazine’s list of the 200 Best Small Companies in America. WESTON strengthened its capabilities by establishing new analytical laboratory facilities, and developing a patented transportable hazardous waste incinerator. The company was also awarded a major contract to manage the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Civilian Radioactive Waste Management Program, and began work on Superfund projects for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). By the end of the 1980s, the WESTON staff exceeded 2,000 employees nationwide.
WESTON has since grown to a company with 60 offices around the world. WESTON’s employees are well-qualified to address today’s demanding scientific, engineering and environmental issues. More than 300 of these employees are registered professional engineers or certified geologists, toxicologists, ecologists, industrial hygienists, chemists, and hazardous waste managers.
The WESTON organization has become a leading international environmental consultant and on-site problem solver having served more than 6,000 clients, including half of the Fortune 500 companies, federal agencies, and state and local governments. WESTON is the third largest environmental services company in the industrial sector, and is ranked 40th among the top 500 engineering design firms in the country . At any one time during the year, WESTON is engaged in environmental projects for as many as 1,500 companies and public sector organizations.
WESTON works with each client as a strategic partner to define environmental issues and then develop the best course of action to manage those issues and enhance the value of the client’s organization. Over 85% of WESTON’s business is from repeat clients—clients who have been satisfied with our ability to provide technically sound, cost-effective solutions that minimize risk.
For almost 50 years, WESTON has been in the forefront of the environmental movement. In recent years, WESTON has become an outspoken advocate of the environmental concept of sustainable development. Sustainable development, which means simply “to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” has received growing support from international business leaders who recognize that it makes good business sense to integrate the principles of sustainable development into their operations. Long before sustainable development became a household word, WESTON was incorporating these very same principles into their services.
